Redundancy: Employee Options

What an Employee Can Do

Dealing With the Decision

Unless it is voluntary, redundancy is often a very unwelcome situation to be in.  Decisions about your life have been made by others and now you are faced with a whole new future.

There can be a feeling of rejection, of lower self-worth, and of insecurity now that employment is no longer assured.

It can be difficult, but the only solution is to realise that it is a business decision, not a personal one, and to apply oneself to making the best of what lies ahead.  In fact, if handled well, it can be a great opportunity to make changes for the better.

This is a two stage process.  Firstly you must calmly evaluate your options, then act on the decision you make.

Evaluating Your Options

Spend a while weighing up the different opportunities that now present themselves to you.

Many people make the mistake of limiting themselves to what they have always done.  But take a look at what you enjoy doing, and consider the possibilities of real change. Even if you decide not to follow them, you will feel better for having made the decision.

You may actually want to take a job with lower stress levels, or smaller demands on your time.  Perhaps you have a burning ambition to start your own business, or to try freelance work or consultancy for a while.  Maybe you want a career change: a move into another industry or discipline that appeals to you.

Think about these things; take reasonable time and do some research if necessary.  Then you will be in a position to act.

Taking Action: How Training Can Help

The simplest decision is to stay in the area you know.  But you still need to find a job, so you are likely to benefit from acquiring skills that will help you with your job search.

You may also want to improve your areas of weakness, and there are several generic skills that will help to improve almost everyone's effectiveness at work.

If you choose to go for a different job, either at a higher level or in another discipline, you will benefit from training in skills that will help you in your new environment.

Even if you decide to become self-employed or start a business, there are key areas where training will be extremely beneficial.

Our Back On Track scheme is designed to help you in all these situations.
