What is Redundancy ?

Many people are made redundant each year and no sector is safe from redundancy.
Redundancy is a form of dismissal from a job. Reasons include:
• New technology or a new system has made your job unnecessary
• The job you were hired for no longer exists
• The need to cut costs means staff numbers must be reduced
• The business is closing down or moving

Coping with Your Emotions in a Redundancy Situation

People who are made redundant feel a range of emotions at this time and may find it hard to talk about their feelings. Some of these feelings might be:
• Shock
• Denial
• Anger
• Acceptance
These emotions exist at different times, and are perfectly natural. There are no easy answers, because everyone deals with their feelings in their own way.
It's a time of change and what was a big part of your life has now been taken away. It can be worrying if you're not sure what to do next or have financial concerns.
If you need someone to talk to, counselling help is available through initiatives such as the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy’s database..
People will get through this in their own time and in their own way, but the best advice is to channel your feelings and emotions into moving forward rather than looking back in regret.

Try to stay positive and motivated. It may be difficult to believe, but Remember! It is the position which has been made redundant, not the individual.

Help from Your Employer

Your employer might provide free careers guidance to help you decide on your next move. Some will offer money for training. Whatever they offer, make the most of it. If you're not offered careers guidance by your employer, call the Careers Advice Service on 08080 100 333 to speak to a career coach who will help you think about your options.

What am I going to do next?
Don't make a rushed decision - a quick fix might not be the best way forward. Weigh up all your options carefully - this way you'll make the best and most informed decision.
Even if you don't get a job straight away, use your time constructively. If you're not working you could do voluntary work to get experience in a new line of work.
It is widely recommended that training in new or existing skills is undertaken where possible.
